Terms of service

Last updated October 17, 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and YAFG LLC (“we”, “us”), the company that provides CalmHandoff on calmhandoff.com and in the CalmHandoff apps for iPhone and Android. We have tried to write them so they can be read in one sitting. Our Privacy policy explains how we handle your information.

The short version

  • You must be 18 or older and live in the United States.
  • Your co-parent sees everything in your shared family space, and entries can’t be edited or deleted by anyone.
  • CalmHandoff isn’t a law firm and doesn’t give legal advice. Only a court decides how it treats a record.
  • Paid plans are paid for 6 or 12 months at a time and renew automatically until you turn off renewal, which you can do any time in Plan & billing.
  • If you ask within 7 days of any charge, we refund it in full.
  • The Free plan has no time limit, and one paid plan covers both parents.
  • These terms are governed by Virginia law.

1. This agreement

By creating an account or using CalmHandoff, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use CalmHandoff. If you use it on behalf of someone else, you confirm you are allowed to accept these terms for them.

2. Who can use CalmHandoff

You must be at least 18 years old and live in the United States. CalmHandoff is designed for parents and other adults who share the care of children. Children don’t have accounts.

3. Your account

  • Give us accurate information, including an email address you can receive mail at, and keep it current.
  • Keep your password private, and don’t share your account. Anything written from your account is recorded as written by you.
  • A family space has two parents. Send an invite link only to your co-parent: whoever holds it can join your family space.
  • Tell us right away at support@calmhandoff.com if you think someone else has used your account.

4. The shared family record

CalmHandoff exists to keep an accurate record both parents can rely on. That means:

  • Both parents see the same space. Your co-parent sees everything in it, including messages, expenses, call recordings and transcripts, and the location of your check-ins. Paying for a plan gives no extra access.
  • Entries are permanent. Messages and other entries can’t be edited or deleted, by you, your co-parent or us. You can always add a new entry that corrects or explains an earlier one. Please write with that in mind.
  • If you delete your account while your co-parent still has one, the shared record stays available to them, with your name on the entries you created. When the last parent deletes their account, the whole family space is deleted. See our account deletion page.
  • Verification: exports carry a code anyone can use on our website to confirm the export hasn’t been changed since we created it. It confirms integrity only. It doesn’t confirm that what someone wrote is true.

6. Plans, trial and renewal

What a plan covers

CalmHandoff has a Free plan and two paid plans, Family and Family Pro. One paid plan covers both parents in the family, whichever of them pays. Current prices are on our pricing page; today Family is $69 for 6 months or $119 for 12 months, and Family Pro is $139 or $229. Prices are in US dollars; any sales tax that applies is shown at checkout. A parent can also buy the Pro tools add-on for their own account.

Free trial

A new family gets 14 days of Family Pro free. No card is needed and nothing is charged when the trial ends: the family simply moves to the Free plan unless one of you chooses a paid plan. We email you before the trial ends.

Payment and automatic renewal

Paid plans are paid in advance for the period you choose, 6 or 12 months, through our payment processor, Stripe. Your plan renews automatically at the end of each period for the same length of time, and we charge the payment method on file the price in effect at that time, until you turn off renewal.

You can turn off renewal at any time, online, in Plan & billing. Your plan then continues until the end of the period you paid for, and your family moves to the Free plan after that. If the parent who pays turns off renewal, we tell the other parent, who can take the plan over. If we change a plan’s price, we will tell you at least 30 days before it applies to your next renewal, so you can turn off renewal first.

If a payment fails, Stripe emails the parent who pays and tries again over the following days. If it still can’t be collected, the plan ends and your family moves to the Free plan. Your records are never deleted because a payment failed. Before a 12-month plan renews, we remind you by email.

7. Refunds

If you’re not happy, email support@calmhandoff.com within 7 days of a charge, either your first purchase or a renewal, and we will refund that charge in full. No reason is needed. We then end the plan, and your family moves to the Free plan with all its records intact.

After 7 days, charges are not refundable, and turning off renewal doesn’t refund the time remaining in the current period, except where the law requires otherwise. If we end the service for everyone, we refund the unused part of any plan you paid for.

8. The Free plan and changes to the service

The Free plan has no time limit, and your co-parent never has to pay to join. We improve CalmHandoff over time and may change, add or remove features. If we ever stop offering the Free plan or close CalmHandoff, we will give you at least 90 days’ notice by email and make sure you can download your family record first.

9. Using CalmHandoff fairly

You agree not to use CalmHandoff to:

  • threaten, harass, stalk or intimidate anyone, or violate a protective or no-contact order;
  • impersonate someone, or sign in to an account that isn’t yours;
  • record a call or upload a recording, photo or document you don’t have the right to share;
  • upload anything illegal, including any sexual content involving a minor, which we report to the authorities;
  • send spam, malware or anything meant to disrupt or break CalmHandoff;
  • probe, scrape or reverse-engineer CalmHandoff, or get around its security or plan limits; or
  • break any law.

Because entries are permanent, a message that breaks these rules stays in the record. It may also stay visible to the court or attorneys you share an export with.

10. Recorded calls

A call is recorded only when the parent placing it chooses to, and the other parent must agree before joining. Both parents see that the call is being recorded for as long as it lasts. Some states require every person on a call to agree to its recording. You are responsible for following the recording laws that apply to you, including when anyone else, such as a child, joins the call.

11. Your content

You own what you write and upload. You give us permission to store it, process it, show it to your co-parent, include it in exports you or your co-parent create, and use it in the ways our Privacy policy describes, including with the service providers listed there, only to provide CalmHandoff. This permission lasts as long as the content is in CalmHandoff.

You are responsible for what you post. We don’t review content in advance, but we may act on content or accounts that break these terms. Because the record is permanent, that usually means suspending an account rather than removing entries, unless the law requires removal.

CalmHandoff itself, its software, design and name, belong to YAFG LLC. We give you a personal, non-transferable right to use it under these terms. If you send us feedback, we may use it without owing you anything.

12. The app stores

If you use our iPhone app, downloaded from Apple’s App Store, these terms also include the following:

  • These terms are between you and YAFG LLC, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content.
  • Your right to use the app is limited to Apple-branded devices you own or control, as Apple’s App Store terms allow.
  • Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app. We do.
  • If the app fails to meet a warranty that applies by law, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the price you paid for the app, if any. Otherwise Apple has no warranty obligation for the app.
  • We, not Apple, are responsible for any claims relating to the app, including product liability claims, claims that it fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, consumer protection claims, and claims that it infringes someone’s intellectual property.
  • You confirm you are not located in a country subject to a US government embargo, and are not on a US government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  • Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.

Subscriptions are purchased on our website, not through Apple or Google, so these terms, and not the app stores’ refund policies, govern them.

13. Ending your use

You can stop using CalmHandoff and delete your account at any time in Settings. We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, or when the law requires it. Unless it would be unsafe or unlawful, we will tell you why and give you a chance to download your records. Sections 4, 11 and 14 to 18 continue to apply after your account ends.

14. Disclaimers

We work hard to keep CalmHandoff available, accurate and secure, but we provide it “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties not stated in these terms, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don’t promise that CalmHandoff will be uninterrupted or error-free, that AI suggestions will be correct, or that any court, agency or person will accept or rely on a record.

15. Limit of liability

To the extent the law allows, YAFG LLC won’t be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data or goodwill, arising from your use of CalmHandoff. Our total liability for any claim relating to CalmHandoff is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose and US $100.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited by law, such as for fraud, gross negligence or willful misconduct, or any rights you have as a consumer that can’t be waived.

16. Governing law and disputes

If you have a problem, please email us first at support@calmhandoff.com. Most issues are resolved quickly that way, and we will make a real effort to resolve yours within 30 days.

These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and applicable federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute that isn’t resolved informally will be decided exclusively by the state courts located in Fairfax County, Virginia, or the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Alexandria Division, and you and we consent to their jurisdiction. Either of us may instead bring a claim in a small-claims court where you live, if it qualifies. If the law where you live gives you the right to bring a claim in your local courts, nothing here takes that right away.

17. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. For a material change, we will email you and show a notice in the app at least 30 days before it takes effect. If you keep using CalmHandoff after that, the new terms apply. If you don’t agree, you can turn off renewal or delete your account before then.

18. General

These terms and our Privacy policy are the whole agreement between you and us about CalmHandoff. If a court finds part of them unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don’t enforce a part right away, we haven’t given it up. You may not transfer these terms to anyone else; we may transfer them to a company that takes over CalmHandoff, and we will tell you if we do. Neither of us is responsible for delays caused by events beyond reasonable control.
